Lawson Tillman Stage Play - Lower Alabama Stage (6:00PM - 7:00PM)
HUCC Presents: Lawson Tillman: A Poor Man's Dream What happens to a dream deferred? Lawson Tillman, the playwright, explores the constant, daily strain of poverty’s effects amongst the Tillman family. The Tillman family work tirelessly as sharecroppers in Brown Mountain, North Carolina. The setting takes place from the late 50’s to the mid 70’s. The protagonist, Lawson Tillman, struggles to gain his identity in a world that has already “marked” him as a failure. Lawson’s mother Ethan is the glue that holds the family together while her husband, Nathan Tillman is a constant plague to the Tillman household. Yet Lawson finds peace from his inner and outer struggles within his mother’s love and his childhood sweetheart. As we travel with Lawson from childhood to his teenage years, his triumph spirit emerges strong and he is able to overcome his pessimist environment.

AID Atlanta National FREE HIV Testing (10:00AM - 7:00PM)
Get tested and know your status, Atlanta. As part of National HIV Testing Day, AID Atlanta is offering free HIV testing from Friday, June 25 through Sunday, June 27. The weekend kicks off at UNDERGROUND ATLANTA, on Friday, June 25 from 10 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. with testing, counseling, entertainment and other health and wellness activities. The Atlanta metropolitan area has the fifth highest number of AIDS cases in the country, according to the Georgia Department of Human Resources. And, according to Jeffrey Crowley, director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, “Atlanta is a major epicenter in the HIV crisis in the U.S.” “Getting tested for HIV is more important than ever,” said Lamont Scales, prevention programs manager at AID Atlanta. “This is a disease that doesn’t discriminate and it’s time for everyone to know their status so we can stop the spread of HIV.” • Every 9½ minutes (on average), someone in the United States is infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. • In 2006, an estimated 56,300 people became infected with HIV. • More than 1 million people in the United States are living with HIV. • Of those 1 million people living with HIV, 1 out of 5 do not know they are infected. (People who have HIV but don't know it can unknowingly pass the virus to their partners.) • Despite new therapies, people with HIV still develop AIDS. • Over 1 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with AIDS. • More than 14,000 people with AIDS still die each year in the United States* • Tracy Elliott, executive director of AID Atlanta, said, “We’re challenging Atlanta to step up and get tested this weekend. Our goal is to get 1,000 people tested, but we offer testing year round at the AID Atlanta offices.” • Dr. Kevin Fenton, Director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, said, “…The fact is that, right here in the United States, every 9½ minutes someone’s mother, someone’s daughter, someone’s son, someone’s father, or friend, becomes infected with HIV.”
