ATLANTA
– In our exciting time of political and social change, a group of Generation-X artists leave their apathy behind to make provocative, artistic statements. On Friday, May 29, all ages and persuasions are invited to the opening reception of Split Level of Consciousness presented by SCAD-Atlanta, beginning at 6 p.m.  Diverse in culture, perspective and in media, the participating artists address key issues that permeate popular culture today. Notions of femininity, masculinity, sexuality, commercialism and a wide range of body politics are explored through painting, printmaking and sculpture. Viewers may experience some of the work as sensual, provocative and, at times, flirtatious.

As a special feature, this show includes two live painting performances on Thursday, June 4, in conjunction with A Taste of Underground.  Beginning at 11 a.m., Danny Paulete, a seasoned climber will explore primal behavior and instinct in response to physically challenging situations in the most unique of artistic expressions.  Paulete will be ascending the 138-foot Peach Drop tower of Underground Atlanta with a canvas which he will then attach at the top.  Then, he will descend the tower while painting on the way down.  By the end of this three-hour process, an image will be revealed to the viewer to marvel upon and ponder its meaning.

For the second performance beginning at 12:30 p.m., entitled, “Dancing’, Swingin’ and Getting’ Our Paint On,” Deidra Tyree will provide a performance piece for the whole family at the pavilion encompassing music, dancing and painting.  With help from a few artists and/or audience members, Deidra will execute action painting on three dancers while live music plays in the background.  A large drop cloth canvas underneath will catch the paint as it falls creating an unknown image for the viewers and the artists.  Live music will be provided before, during and after the performance.

The Split Level of Consciousness exhibition will feature work by: Rachel Evans, Page Burch, Mishele Lesser, Danny Paulete, Lucha Rodriguez, Tiffany Sinnott, Staci Stone, George M. Turner Jr., Deidra Tyree, Yi-Hsin Tzeng and Claire Wang.  The exhibition will be featured at Underground Atlanta in the Upper
